Some babbling I did before I actually started on the first three assignments: 

I knew from the way she crossed her eyes and wailed like Tom Waits that she was me.

I’m sure she had returned from the battered remains of the skeleton forest across the street from the high school. I saw the tattered brown knapsack that was slung across her right shoulder, in the crook of her right arm she carried frayed copies of her favorite books and in her left fist she violently swung the scrunched up beanie I was wearing. Inadvertently she crossed the street in front of a skidding car that screeched to a halt.

I think when our eyes met the spark that was generated knocked me off my feet because my ass was suddenly sore and my beanie was four feet from me. She was wearing the same scraped knee.

“Hey,” I said in a low rasp.

“Hey,” was the reply.

Fear immediately bubbled up inside of me. Somewhere a wall had been broken and had allowed this monstrosity before me to stand as she did. She was changed.
